Computer Scientists Solved the Bermuda Triangle Mystery

Oceanographic surveyors of the sea floor in the area of the Bermuda Triangle and the North Sea region between continental Europe and Great Britain have discovered significant quantities of methane hydrates and older eruption sites.

1. Più che ’l doppiar delli scacchi s’immilla: il numero degli angeli

Per quanto possa sembrare incredibile, c’è un verso della Divina Commedia che significa esattamente “è più grande di 18.446.744.073.709.551.615”.

Sì, sì, avete letto bene, Dante dice proprio così. Si riferisce al numero degli angeli del Paradiso, argomento sul quale certo nessuno di noi si sognerebbe di discettare, ma lui sì, essendoci stato e avendoli visti. Sicché non ha potuto fare a meno di interrogarsi su quanti fossero e di provare a darcene almeno un’idea. Riuscendoci, peraltro, in modo superbamente poetico, con una suggestiva e poco nota metafora che chiama in causa gli scacchi, la matematica e un’antichissima leggenda orientale.

Ma vediamo.

Siamo nel canto XXVIII del Paradiso: Dante è con Beatrice nel Nono Cielo (o Primo Mobile, o Cristallino), l’ultimo dei cieli fisici, ed è abbagliato dalla contemplazione di Dio e dei nove cori angelici, cerchi luminosi e in perenne movimento nei quali gli angeli sfavillano come scintille da un ferro incandescente.

A questo punto il poeta ci dice che:

L’incendio suo seguiva ogni scintilla

(ciascuna “scintilla”, cioè ciascun angelo, girava insieme al suo “incendio”, cioè al suo cerchio di luce)

ed eran tante, che ’l numero loro

più che ’l doppiar delli scacchi s’immilla (vv. 91-93).

Ecco, quest’affascinante ultimo verso, dall’aria così enigmatica ma proprio per questo ancor più suggestiva e quasi “magica”, significa esattamente “è più grande di 18.446.744.073.709.551.615”. O, se preferite, di 264-1, che è lo stesso. E non a caso è un verso assai più noto, e caro, ai matematici e agli scacchisti che ai critici letterari e ai dantisti. Le cui note esplicative in merito, nei tradizionali commenti a pie’ di pagina del capolavoro dantesco, sono spesso frettolose e superficiali.

Cominciamo da quel “s’immilla” finale, immaginoso ed efficace neologismo che sta per “si inoltra nelle migliaia”, o, secondo altri, per “si trasforma, diventa una serie di migliaia”; come che sia, il senso è “si milluplica”. Nel Paradiso vi sono vari altri esempi di questi neologismi numerali, di conio tipicamente dantesco: si pensi al doppio lume che “s’addua”, cioè si congiunge, sopra l’anima di Giustiniano (canto VII, v. 6); alla fama di Folchetto da Marsiglia, che non morirà prima che “questo centesimo anno ancor s’incinqua”, cioè che siano passati cinque secoli (canto IX, v. 40); al Verbo divino che “s’intrea” con il Padre e con lo Spirito Santo, cioè si unisce ad essi a formare il mistero della Trinità (canto XIII, v. 57).

Singularity Chess by Paul Burgess

I originally ran across this chess variation back when I was a graduate student in mathematics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. We're talking late 70s or early 80s. I found this game described on a calendar in the math department library. Thinking back, I'm not sure just what the name of the game was. I call it "singularity chess," or "whirlpool chess," for reasons that will become evident.
